*1XX MAIN ENTRIES - Serials (print format)
Change to 7XX, if necessary, to conform to AACR, in which case the name must be present in the descriptive cataloguing.
If these tags are used they must conform to current AACR practices and MARC standards (see General Guidelines for Copy Cataloguing), and be verified according to the authorities workflow (see Authority Workflow).
*100 Main entry-Personal name: Rarely used in serials
*110 Main entry-Corporate name: Official publications of societies, etc. are entered under 110 for continuations, but not for periodicals. See AACR2 and CONSER manuals.
*111 Main entry-Meeting name: Generally used only when the title of the conference is not distinctive (e.g. Proceedings). See AACR2 and CONSER manuals
*130 Main entry-Uniform title: Used for distinctive titles when there is (or may be) a conflict with an identical title. Follow the current LCRI for the qualifier to be used.
20X-24X TITLE AND TITLE-RELATED FIELDS - Serials (print format)
210 Abbreviated title: Do not code.
212 Variant access title: Obsolete. Delete.
222 Key title: Delete if tag 245 is changed. Delete if it duplicates tag 245 |a. Do not code except for records for annual reports when the 245 is very generic, then add if necessary (e.g. Annual report - Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission).
*240 Uniform title: Rarely if ever used.
242 Translation of title by cataloging agency: Do not code. Delete.
243 Collective uniform title: Do not code. Delete.
245 Title statement: Follow AACR, CONSER and MARC coding manual. Generally use |b only for parallel titles and subtitle information containing the name of a corporate body, otherwise use a quoted note for other title information.
246 Varying form of title: Use for varying forms of title. Follow LC guidelines when using MARC coding manual. Do not enter initial articles in subfield |a.
25X-28X EDITION, IMPRINT, ETC. FIELDS - Serials (print format)
250 Edition statement: Code, including |b if necessary
260 Publication, distribution, etc. (imprint): Accept information in derived record if you don't have the first issue in hand. Code for information that appears on the first issue. If the information changes, add a 500 note with the appropriate information. Multiple places and publishers are acceptable if present in derived records. Add |c if the information is known, but don't guess at the dates of earlier volumes (leave off the date altogether if not known). The date(s) of publication need not match those in tag 362.
Government documents - When a commercial publisher appears prominently on an item in conjunction with a government body, consider the item a government document (in most cases) unless all of the others for that body are classified with LC. If a government body gives an author funding, it is not necessarily a government document unless the body has commissioned the publication.
263 Projected publication date: Do not code. Delete.
265 Source for acquisition/subscription address: Obsolete. Delete from derived records.
270 Address: Do not code. Delete.
3XX PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION, ETC. FIELDS - Serials (print format)
300 Physical description: Accept. Delete information in < > brackets.
307 Hours, etc.: Do not code. Delete.
310 Current publication frequency: Accept, update or change to tag 321 if necessary. A 310 must be present in all serial records, unless the frequency is unknown. Include |b information if necessary and if readily available. Information in FF Freq and Regl must match that in this tag.
321 Former publication frequency: Accept, add, or update as necessary. Include |b if information is readily available.
340 Physical medium: Do not code. Disregard.
350 Price: Obsolete. Delete in derived records.

Do not use |z
Use a caption with chronology in 362 if present, but note that a caption is not used with chronology in the holdings record or in the item record
See CONSER and AACR2 for further instructions
*4XX SERIES STATEMENTS - Serials (print format)

5XX NOTES - Serials (print format)
500 General note: Do not delete notes made by contributing libraries unless they are copy-specific or factually incorrect. Notes may be required to justify added entries as per AACR. Tag 500 is used if no information specific tag exists. Many 5XX tags are also linked to 7XX tags. See AACR and CONSER for further instructions.
504 Bibliography, etc. note: Accept. Code only in general terms
506 Restrictions on access note: Do not code. Delete.

583 Action note: Do not code. Delete.
585 Exhibitions note: Accept if correct. Code if necessary.
586 Awards note: Do not code. Delete.
590 Local notes: Delete from derived records if not applicable. Add for local notes. With the exception of rare books, note that copy-specific notes are input in the MORRIS copy record, and item-specific notes in the item record.
Beginning Sept. 2003, code field 590 for any donated materials with a McMaster bookplate. The note should follow the contents of the bookplate with the inclusion of the date. When an additional copy is donated, add the note to the bibliographic record, not the copy record. For example:
590 : : |a Donated by The Stephen Leacock Association, 2003.
590 : : |a Copy 2: donated by The Stephen Leacock Association, 2003.
Do not follow this practice for materials bearing bookplates acknowledging special funds from which they were purchased.
Notes about Thode range and call numbers are coded here as follows:
Shelved at Range XXX. Call numbers for Thode periodicals are for information only.
Note that a public display note is also added to the copy record as follows: This call number is for information only. Thode periodicals are shelved alphabetically by title on the 2nd floor. See "Range No." above.
*6XX SUBJECT ACCESS FIELDS - Serials (print format)
Add subject headings only if those in the derived record are not LC, not in English, lacking, or are significantly inadequate or out of date.
Delete French subjects (6XX with second indicator 6) and any subject headings created by contributing libraries (e.g. 6XX with second indicators 2, 4, 5 or 7). For use of Medical Subject Headings (MeSH headings) see tag 653. Bibliographic records sometime carry an LC subject equivalent but, if not and the subject is relevant, supply one.
Fiction: McMaster policy is to delete the subjects in derived records for single works of fiction and, similarly, not to code them in original records. Exceptions to this policy include subjects of historical significance (e.g. world wars, Shakespeare, and such), and subjects pertaining to collections of fiction by more than one literary author.
For Canadian materials, if an equivalent LC subject heading exists, use it and delete the NLC heading. Use NLC subject headings only if there is no LC equivalent, but use LC free-floating subdivisions. Exception: For subjects dealing specifically with Canadian history or Canadian politics and government, use the NLC heading as it will normally contain chronological subdivisions that are more specific than those used by LC.
When a specific subject heading is required and LC and NLC do not make one, follow LC Subject Manual and create a local subject entry. This type of local entry carries second indicator "4" and should be reported to Catalogue Services for authority work.
*600 Subject added entry-Personal name: Delete |e and |h. Delete initial article in |t subfield.
Note that for Festschriften we make a 600 if more than 20% of the item is about the honouree. If the Festschrift also contains a bibliography of the honouree's works which constitutes more than 20% of the item, add another 600 with the subdivision "|x Bibliography."
For Canadian materials see 6XX.
*610 Subject added entry-Corporate name: Delete |h.
For Canadian materials see 6XX.
*630 Subject added entry-Uniform title: Computer programs are tagged 630, not 650. Change to correct form on derived records.
For Canadian materials see 6XX.
*650 Subject added entry-Topical term: Use LC rather than NLC. In some specific cases we use both:
Federal government |z Canada (LC)
Federal-provincial relations (NLC)
For Canadian materials, if an equivalent LC subject heading exists, use it and delete the NLC heading. Use NLC subject headings only if there is no LC equivalent, but use LC free-floating subdivisions. Exception: For subjects dealing specifically with Canadian history or Canadian politics and government, use the NLC heading as it will normally contain chronological subdivisions that are more specific than those used by LC. Code second indicator "5" for NLC subject headings. For local subject headings, code second indicator "4".
Note that the form subdivision |x Periodicals is used for serials (both periodicals and continuations).
*651 Subject added entry-Geographic name: For Canadian materials see 650.
653 Index term-Uncontrolled: Delete unless it is a Medical Subject Heading (MeSH heading). Do not code. MeSH headings (653s with second indicator 2): indicators must be blank; and any subfields following the |a must be deleted.
654 Subject added entry-Faceted topical terms: Do not code. Delete.
655 Index term-Genre/form: Do not code. Delete.
690 Local subject access field: Used for topical subject headings created locally. Delete in derived records.
For Macmillan collection use:
690 : 4: |a Macmillan collection.
691 Local subject access fields-Geographic name: Do not code. Delete. Use 651 with 2nd indicator "4" for local geographic subject headings.
699 Added class number: Delete. Do not code.
*70X-75X ADDED ENTRIES - Serials (print format)
Do not use |f unless the LC authority record carries it. Do not use |h. Do not include initial article in |t.
If these tags are used they must conform to current AACR practices and MARC standards (see General Guidelines for Copy Cataloguing), and be verified according to the authorities workflow (see Authority Workflow).
*700 Added entry-Personal name: Code as per AACR, CONSER and MARC coding manual. Do not use |e. Delete initial article in |t. Personal names are rarely used in records for serials
*710 Added entry-Corporate name: Code as per AACR, CONSER and MARC coding manual. Do not use |h.
720 Added entry-Uncontrolled name: Do not code. Delete.
730 Added entry-Uniform title: Code as per AACR, CONSER and MARC. This is an authority controlled tag, therefore authority workflow guidelines must be followed.
740 Added entry-Uncontrolled related/analytical title: Varying forms of the title are recorded in field 246. 740 is limited to uncontrolled analytical titles (titles that are not controlled through an authority file).
752 Added entry-Hierarchical place name: Do not code. Delete.
755 Added entry-Physical characteristics: Do not code. Delete.
76X-78X Linking Entries - Serials (print format)
760 Main series entry: Delete. Do not code. Enter any required series information in 4XX or 8XX tags.
765 Original language entry: Accept. Code if information is readily available.
767 Translation entry: Accept if not redundant.
770 Supplement/special issue entry: Accept. Use only for titles which have (or would have) their own catalogue records. Cf 525.
772 Parent record entry: Accept. Code as per AACR, CONSER and MARC.
773 Host item entry: Accept only if bibliographic level is "b". Code if record describes a serial wholly contained in this serial.
775 Other edition entry: Accept or code if the other edition is in our collection.
776 Additional physical form entry: Accept or code if both formats are part of the Library's collection. Both records (one for each format) require a 776, as well as a corresponding 530.
780 Preceding entry: Accept. Code as necessary as per AACR, CONSER and MARC. Leave |w as is unless the information has changed. Some |w subfields are present for financial links; only the cataloguer responsible for maintenance adds these. Use |w to link preceding and succeeding entries by entering each record's bib. number when cataloguing successive entries.
785 Succeeding entry: Accept. Code as necessary as per AACR, CONSER and MARC. Follow directions for |w as above for 780.
787 Nonspecific relationship entry: Accept if justified in a note. First indicator is "1".
*80X-830 SERIES ADDED ENTRIES - Serials (print format)
Add if the authoritative or local form of a traced series (800, 810, 811, 830) differs from that on the item (the 4XX tag must be 490 1 in this case). Check 810 and
811 tags carefully with AACR, as they may have changed form to 830. Be sure that the form of numbering corresponds to the authoritative form. Change any 840 to 830. Do not include initial article in an 830 (second indicator must be zero). Follow AACR and MARC coding.
841-88X HOLDINGS, ALTERNATE GRAPHICS, ETC.- Serials (print format)
841-854 Holdings, alternate graphics, etc.: Do not code. Delete.
856 Electronic location and access: Code in records for remote access computer files. For serials (print format), use of this tag is limited to:
- bibliographic records which reflect the Library's holdings of both the print and remote access electronic version of the one title on the single record; and,
- supplementary material in electronic format accessed remotely
When providing an 856, test the link by clicking on the URL in WebPAC. When coding for items restricted to McMaster, add "|z * McMaster only" to the end of the URL. Do not make a 590 note to indicate that the item is restricted to McMaster.
Some records may have multiple 856 tags if a resource is available from more than one aggregator or site.
If both UL and HS have access to the same electronic resource and it is added to the record for the print, code the individual URLs in 856 tags if they are different.
Delete 856 field in derived records when McMaster does not have access to the site.
See Electronic Resources cataloguing manual for further instructions
863-886 Holdings, alternate graphics, etc.: Do not code. Delete.
