Serials Cataloguing - ContinuationsThis is a featured page

Goal: To integrate serials cataloguing into the monograph workflow. Note that this will include only continuations that are ordered through Collections or that are gifts/donations.

McMaster defines continuations as being published annually or less, but each item being catalogued should also be examined to see if it fits the definition of a serial as per AACR, Subject Cataloguing Manual, etc.

Rhonda will continue to catalogue all subscription items whether periodicals or continuations.

Procedures:
Follow serials cataloguing procedures (see Serials Cataloguing Manual). For continuations we always supply chronology in the bibliographic record (362) unless the caption is v. in which case we don't supply chronology.

For item records, copy records, summary of holdings and labelling, apply the following:

Copy record:
Normally continuations circulate and will be given the collection codes/item types of regular circulating materials (e.g. For a Mills continuation, the collection code will be 'ml' and the item type will be 'norm'). Note that any volume numbers or dates are not part of the call number; they are normally contained in the volume statement in the item record and/or the summary of holdings record.

Item record:
If the item is circulating, follow regular procedures for barcode placement and item record creation. The item record must contain a volume statement.

Summary of holdings:

All serials must contain a summary of holdings statement. Refer to NISO guidelines. Do not supply a caption for subordinate numbering unless it is necessary for the spine label.

Labelling:
Some general guidelines and examples for writing the call number in the book for labelling purposes:

Example 1:

362:0 : 19th ed. (2002/2003)-
  • 19th ed. (2002/2003) in item record
  • 19th ed. (2002/2003) in summary of holdings record
  • 2002/2003 in call number in book

* For continuations, when the book has both volume numbering and a date, write the date in the book, but not the volume number

Example 2:

362:0 : 28th (Nov. 29-Dec. 1, 1995)
  • 28th (1995) in item record
  • 28th (1995) in summary of holdings record
  • 1995 in call number in book

Example 3:

362:0 : 16th ed., vol. 1 (2000)
  • 16th ed.:v.1 (2000) in item record
  • 16th ed.:v.1 (2000) in summary of holdings record
  • volume number and year only in call number in book

Example 4:

362:0 : 1992 ed.
  • 1992 in item record
  • 1992 in summary of holdings record
  • 1992 in call number in book

*Do not use the caption in item, summary of holdings or label when it appears with a date

Example 5:

362:0 : 1st ed.
  • 1st ed. in item record
  • 1st ed. in summary of holdings record
  • 1st ed. in call number in book

* Use the caption in item, summary of holdings and label when it appears with a number

Example 6:
