VARIABLE DATA FIELDS - Rare Books


050 Library of Congress call number: Disregard. For rare books, classification is by accession number (see Call Number Guidelines).

100 Main entry - Personal name: Code |e only for plaintiff, defendant and claimant.

245 Title statement: Must be identical to the title page or the chief source of information. Follow Descriptive Cataloging of Rare Books (DCRB) rules for shortening long titles. Do not use any punctuation not found in the chief source of information. If the number of responsible persons or bodies named in a single statement is lengthy, follow DCRB rules for shortening the |c.

250 Edition statement: Code following DCRB rules.

260 Publication, distribution, etc. (imprint): Record all publishing information in this field. Do not eliminate any names. Follow DCRB rules.

300 Physical description: Pagination must be correct, and there must be a subfield |c (e.g. 4to, 8vo, 12mo (in parentheses)). Do not use metric dimensions; delete these in derived records. See Instructions for Recording Pagination of Rare Books for details on how to determine exact pagination sequences for rare books.

500 General note: Use to make necessary descriptive notes.

501 With note: Used only for works issued bound together by the publisher. Rare books are almost always bound by the owner, therefore the notes will be considered of a local nature and will be located in the 590 field.

510 Citation/reference note: Enter McMaster bibliographical citations in this field, coding first indicator "4". If the derived record matches the item perfectly, leave the citation in the record. Otherwise delete.

513 Type of report and period covered note: Delete.

533 Reproduction note: Delete. Do not code.

590 Local note: Add all local notes here (e.g. provenance and "bound with" notes). For donated materials, use provenance notes. For example: 590 : : |aProvenance : Name of owner, donor, etc.

700 Added entry - Personal name: Code |e only for plaintiff, defendant and claimant
