Popular Reading CollectionThis is a featured page

The Popular Reading collection is intended to be less "academic library" in both content and appearance. Books are shelved by author rather than LC Class number and dust jackets are being left in place on hardcover books. It will also be more dynamic than the general collection, with poorly circulating titles removed to make space for new additions. Titles that circulate heavily will likely remain in the Popular collection until their circulation statistics drop. It is possible that some titles will be removed within a year or two of their addition to the collection while others remain in place for long periods.

Cataloguing

Import the appropriate record from OCLC and apply the criteria specified in Accepting Catalogue Records.

In the item record, use the following:

Item type: norm
Location: ml
Collection: m/pr
Call number: first three letters of the author's last name (regardless of duplication)
Explicit copy number: copy 1 (or as appropriate if more than one copy is present)
Call type: local

In the back of the book, write the call number, preceeded by "Popular." Books can be added to the regular labeling trucks.

Example for Stephen King:

Physical Processing

  • For hardcover books, apply the barcode and spine label to the dust jacket. Put the jacket in a protector and attach to the book.
  • Use blue spine label protectors.
  • Apply property stickers and tattle-tape as usual.
  • The students will check in the books after processing is complete and put in a Mills bin for shelving.
