008 FIXED-LENGTH DATA ELEMENTS (FIXED FIELDS) - Music Character positions: 00-05 Date entered on file: System generated for derived records. Input date for brief bibs. and origs. 06 Type of date: Must match type of date in 260 |c. "r" may be used for a reprint when the original publication date is unknown, or appears in a note (this is LC practice).

07-10 Date 1: Must match first date in 260 |c. The letter "u" indicates when a date element is totally or partially unknown (e.g. 19uu). 11-14 Date 2: Must match second date in 260 |c, if any, or the original date given in a reprint note. The letter "u" indicates when a date element is totally or partially unknown. Use "9999" for multi-part items that are incomplete. 15-17 Place of publication: Must match 260 |a. Add or change if required.

VARIABLE DATA FIELDS - Music

024 Other standard identifier:
Code if available. For an item with more than one 024, where the |a information is identical and only the |d sections differ, record the |a only (resulting in one occurrence of the field). Code first indicator "2" for international standard music number.
028 Publisher number: Code first indicator as indicated in MARC 21. Code second indicator as follows:
2 = Note, no added entry (use this unless clarification needed)
0 = No note, no added entry (use when providing 500 tag with clarification).

041 Language code: Code |a, |b, |e, |g and |h if applicable. Use |a for sung or spoken text only, and |e for accompanying librettos (e.g. sung or spoken text printed separately from the music). According to MARC 21, in 2001, the practice of placing multiple language codes in one subfield (e.g. |a engfreger) was made obsolete, and subfields |a, |b, |d, |e, |f and |g were changed from Not-repeatable (NR) to Repeatable (R).

050 Library of Congress call number: Accept. Do not code. When 2nd indicator is "0", use unchanged if the call number is complete, and the score is the same edition as stated in the record. LC frequently does not complete the classification in score cataloguing and, in such cases, the item should go to Original Cataloguers. Any 050 with second indicator "4" (meaning that it is assigned by an agency other than LC) cannot be used as a McMaster call number without checking the LC Classification Schedules. See Call Number Guidelines for local practices.

240 Uniform title: Make uniform titles for musical works. First indicator must be "1". In derived records, do not delete |f. Delete |h. Remove initial articles from |a and |p subfields.

243 Collective uniform title: Do not code. Delete. Use 240 if required.

245 Title statement: Follow AACR and MARC 21. For subfield |h (General material designation (GMD)), follow LC practice (see LCRI, 1.1C) and do not code for scores. 254 Musical Presentation Statement: Follow AACR and MARC 21.

300 Physical description: Follow AACR and MARC 21. When cataloguing a score for a single instrument, do not use "score" in the 300. Instead use "v. of music", "p. of music" or "leaves of music" (AACR, 5.5B1 ). For music, |a is repeated for parts information when a subfield |b or |c separates it from the main extent data (e.g. 300 :: |a 1 score (30 p.) ;|c 20 cm. +|a 16 parts ;|c 32 cm.).

306 Playing time: Accept. Do not code.

500 General note: Refer to AACR, chapter 5 for notes specifically made for scores. Duration should be given in a 500 note, not a 306 field.
