Cataloguing Procedures for New Masters Theses

This procedure was implemented in July 2007 and applies immediately to the cataloguing of all theses written in support of Masters degrees.

Lang is eng for thesis written in English; fre for thesis written in French; ger for German, spa for Spanish, ita for Italian. See Wade if not one of these.

In ‡a type the classification number for the department from the chart “LC Classifications to be used when creating records for Master's theses”.

Examples:

Thesis from Department of Physics:
050 04 ‡a QC21.3 ‡b

Thesis from Department of History. Topic is Canadian History:
050 04 ‡a FC51 ‡b

Thesis from Department of History. Topic is U.S. History:

In Horizon, do an author search for the author’s name.
If the name is found, enter into the record exactly as it appears in Horizon (or use the MARC editor to link the name into the new record).

If the name is not found in Horizon, enter the thesis author’s name as found on the title page in ‡a, Last, First Middle.
Ignore titles, degrees, etc.
End the field with a period. (No doubles, though.)

Capitalize only the first word of the title and proper nouns.
Enter subtitles in ‡b. (Space : Space before ‡b.)
The first indicator is always 1
The second indicator tells how many characters to ignore. Use to skip initial articles:
A : second indicator = 2 (“A” plus the following space)
An : second indicator = 3
The : second indicator = 4
Put the author’s name as found on the title page in ‡c. Omit degrees, etc. (Space / Space before ‡c.)
End the field with a period.

Enter the name of the thesis supervisor as it appears on the thesis data page.
If there is more than one supervisor, include each name separated by a comma.
Preceed the name with Supervisor:
Ignore titles, degrees, etc.
End the field with a period.

Fill in the spaces in the parentheses with the abbreviation for the type of thesis at hand.
M.A. and M.Sc. are the most common
Verify the year at the end matches the year the degree was awarded.

Use the department name as the first keyword.
Spell out the department name; use “and”, not “&”
Choose others from the abstract or table of contents that best reflect the content.
Use a new 653 for each keyword.
